OLEDs in use
Atom NanoElectronics has developed the next generation carbon nanotube (CNT)-printed technology. Atom researches, develops, and commercializes CNT-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) technologies for application in flat-panel displays, solid-state lighting, and other electronic products. Atom’s new technology is a low-cost, scalable solution that competes favorably against the current semiconducting electronics both in terms of production costs and available markets. 

Today’s conventional semiconductors are created using a cost-intensive process in a clean room environment via a vacuum-assisted process, and on inflexible, opaque, and costly silicon substrates. In contrast, Atom’s core process is highly cost-effective —- Atom’s printed circuits can be created without a clean room or vacuum, at room temperature, on inexpensive, transparent and flexible substrates such as plastics. Atom’s circuits not only perform all the functions of today’s electronic circuitry, but also provide additional values by exploiting the unique characteristics of CNT-printed electronics: transparency, thermal off-load, and flexibility. Such advantages offer new opportunities and novel products, eventually paving the path towards emerging markets.

Atom creates high-performance integrated circuits that stretch and twist, and exceed the performances of inflexible, amorphous-silicon based complementary metal-oxide semiconductor electronics. CNT-printed electronics are one of the leading candidates to replace the current state-of-the-art technologies, and they have a plethora of additional applications such as radio-frequency devices, lighting products, sensors, batteries, and OLEDs that are commonly used as displays in cellphones, tablets, computers, TVs and in other consumer products. Current OLED displays are manufactured on transparent film of indium tin oxide (ITO). This material is expensive, fragile, and inflexible, and also can degrade the organic light-emitting layers, leading to decreases in performance. In contrast, Atom’s CNT-based transparent thin film transistors (TFTs) are flexible, highly conductive, more robust, and less expensive than current ITO-based OLEDs. Atom has already succeeded in demonstrating the ability to print TFTs via aerosol jet printing.

The market for OLEDs will expand significantly during the next decade, estimated as $9.46 billion in 2012 and $63.28 billion by 2022. Atom is looking to research, develop, and commercialize other OLED devices and manufacturing technologies including: TOLEDs (transparent OLEDs) for the fabrication of OLEDs with transparent cathodes; FOLEDs (flexible OLEDs) for the fabrication of OLEDs on flexible substrates, as well as in flexible circuits for other electronic devices.
